Bio:
Amber Rankin graduated from the University of California Davis in June 2009 with a BA and Honors in both Art Studio and Sociology. During her undergraduate career at UC Davis, Amber worked as an intern at the Institute for Data and Visualization designing and animating complex models of buildings in Autodesk Maya for use in graduate computer science research. After her work with IDAV Amber sought to integrate her interests in sociology and animation with her Sociology Honors Thesis project, Women Working in Animation: Interactions of Gender and Workplace Culture. Amber presented her thesis at the UC Davis Undergraduate Research Conference in April 2009. Through through in-depth, qualitative interviews and a literature review of other traditionally male-dominated, technical careers she explored the experiences of women working in the animation industry and how the workplace “nerd” culture may both alleviated and mask the difficulties of women working in a non-traditional field. After graduating from UC Davis in June 2009, Amber continued to integrate her interests in art and sociology as a Multimedia instructor for the After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens program at John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento. Students explore issues that are important to their community by creating short youth-issue documentary films. Amber instructs in storyboarding, script writing , operating video equipment, editing techniques and software as well as creating stop motion and computer animation. Amber hopes to attend graduate school in animation in the fall of 2011, examples of her most recent work may also be seen at www.coroflot.com/ambermations.
