Even More Figure Drawings

I jut got back from an AMAZING vacation–in the tropics, where it was warm….even though I came back to 25 degree weather I’m in a great mood (especially now that I got my 30 ROck to work! )

Here’s some figure drawings that I did tonight and that actually came out pretty good–maybe its the paper or vacation or something but I think I’m finally getting it. These are done on brown paper with prismacolors–most of them came out pretty good–but I realized that I probably shouldn’t render figures in all green.

Happy New Year!! Its 2012 and we survived and its about time for a New Year’s Blog post (you thought you were gonna get away without reading one of this weren’t you–too late!)

I wrote this post a few days ago (on actual new years) but I didn’t have any art scanned for it yet so I didn’t get around to posting it. Then my new printer, which is the size of a small horse, came in and I had to set it up …and try to stuff my roommate in the box (which worked!!)

Sketches & Studies 1

I’ve been working on some studies these last few days (in addition to Museum and urban sketching!) and here’s what I’ve done so far, I want to get better at drawing hands and faces and people so I’ve been making a lot of these sketches.

Tree Studies

I’ve been hearing that 2011 was the ‘worst year ever’ and with 2012 on the horizon I can’t quite decide what I think about 2011, I have been a Graphic Artist for a year (as my job title too!) and started graduate school in my real passion—2D animation (like films in Black & White—animation is always better in 2D) but I didn’t quite get Sybil finished and never learned to drive (is that really necessary?)–Oh well. It wasn’t perfect but it WAS better than 2010!

Follow WWSD? That is be more like Scarlett O’Hara & less like Liz Lemon—seriously will this one ever get off the list? I don’t think even Liz Lemon wanted to be Liz Lemon so why would I? I’ll be Scarlett instead and with work, grad school, life and a looming quarter-life crisis I will really need to follow this one!
Perfect & Finish Sybil Ludington: Lets face it, the world needs Sybil..and MY ideas and movies and stuff so I better hurry up and finish that.
No. More. Cs. That’s right grad school—you will not win—I will no longer be accepting Cs and right about now is a good time to refer to #1…. “As God as my witness….” right? ) If I have to hole myself up in my studio, deactivate my Facebook (*gasp*), silence my phone and give up sleep for the next 3 months (and drink more coffee—but that’s not really a sacrifice, is it?) I will pass this classes (and I mean REALLY pass these classes).
Finish my Sketchbook Project: what’s that? I almost forgot oops…not to a good start on that one already.
Start a Sketch Journal (and draw in it every day this time…not just once.)
Go to Figure Drawing at least 2 times a week. (who doesn’t need that??)
Go on regular sketchcrawls.
Produce one awesome animated short!
Go. To. France. (and animate awesome stuff there).
More adventures—of the crazy adventurous sort :-p

Class is OVER!

I survived my first actual studio-semester of Grad school and now I’m finally one full-time semester in. The semester was tough–tough like nothing else I’ve tried to pursue. ever. but I survived mostly intact and will do even better next semester! I am still working out the kinks between working full time and going to school part time but I think I have things worked out and have been producing much better work than I was at the beginning of this semester. Here’s to a great break and a much better 2nd studio semester!

Oh…and by popular request here’s my finished piece from Drawing From Imagination–there’s still parts I’m not happy with but I think it came out pretty good (and I hope my instructor thinks so too!). Here it is:

Snow White Illustration

In other news, I’ve been getting a lot of hits on my blog for “Sybil Ludington” (awesome!) and I will be resuming work on that this week and through out the break–I’m hoping to publish it in 2012 if I can finish much of it before AAUs break ends. Unfortunately I learned the hard way last year that portable external HDs are a dangerous place to store your only files and this year I’ve learned so much that I think I might be tempted to take a few pages back to the drawing board!! But keep your eye’s peeled for Sybil and possibly some future Zazzle up-dates

Wow! Before I entered grad school I really wanted to be pushed to improve…now I sort of wish they’d go back to grading on effort for a couple assignments! I AM improving however–and here are some of the things I’ve been working on.

Maude & Geoffrey

Here are my clothed figures of Maude stabbing Geoffrey–if you read Sharon Penmann’s books you may know what I’m talking about but not remember this part! That’s because it never really happened but I’m pretty sure it would have because Maude was the exact opposite of the prissy princesses we see in films now–she waged a decades long war to when her throne back and Geoffrey (her pompous, underling husband) always knew who was boss, even if he would never admit it.

Woman Portrait

Here’s a portrait of a woman that I thought came out pretty good from my figure drawing class–we’re working on doing ages and I think she was a little above middle age in the picture (if this looks like you its probably intentional because I just found the photo on flicker so if you don’t want to be drawn, now is the time to figure out your privacy settings :-p). This was a particularly challenging assignment and I hope that I am getting close to getting structure and expression and age in my drawings but I guess I’ll have to wait until grading to find out.

Drawing People From my Head!

Here’s my last Drawing From Imagination Assignment–which in my mind came out awesome I really, really really tried to meet the requirements and then add even more detail and character to get a good grade–lets hope it works! Unfortunately I am soo pleased with these that I am afraid that I will ultimately be let down by the final grade and critique. The tough grading at AAU is like a catch 22, it motivates me to really really work and understand and re-do my assignments until they are perfect in my eyes but then when I finally get the grade I’m even more disappointed because I can’t say ‘well I only did ‘okay on that one because I wasn’t really trying’–oh real life–why are you so difficult?!? Well here they are–to me they are awesome .

Also, all of these figures were drawn from my imagination with only a few reference photos–I tended to use reference only for the general look and character of the figure but not their pose (not even from a different angle!)
